Origins

Toto’s early history that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan’s rapid economic growth. Discography

You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock band however it’s actually a relatively straightforward rock band. The band started out as a quartet and recorded two albums: 1979’s self titled debut and 1980’s Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a variety of musical backgrounds, their biggest success was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its share of issues. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum “give us an album that is a success or we’ll take you off the market” and the pressure was on them to give it. Toto was able to achieve this feat with the help of the hit song “Africa.”

Toto’s musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, the band members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album opens up hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band’s ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and the distorted AOR which could appear completely unnatural, but actually works extremely well.

After Toto IV, the band’s fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. The group managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of Toto’s lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

David Paich’s work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the band embarked on an extensive world tour to promote the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without the single track “A”. The album also contained an previously unreleased track called “Kari-Anne”.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia – Wetton, Palmer, and Howe–convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
